The David Suzuki Foundation encourages Canadians to make informed decisions when purchasing seafood in an effort to support sustainable seafood markets. By avoiding red- and yellow-listed species and choosing local fish, we can be part of the solutions for healthier oceans. The problem is that many fish species are improperly or insufficiently labeled, making it difficult for the consumer to make educated purchasing decisions. A recent study found that 25 per cent of Canadian seafood is mislabelled. The lack of seafood labelling involves issues around conservation, consumer fraud, and food safety (e.g., mercury warnings vary by fish species).
Question for candidates: Does the political party support enabling better seafood labelling laws?
