The David Suzuki Foundation believes that species scientifically recognized by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) as being endangered, threatened, or special concern require additional protection by Canada's Species at Risk Act. To date, almost none of Canada's marine fish species recognized to be at risk by COSEWIC have received legal protection. DFO's socio-economic analyses used to inform the political listing process are based on traditional economic measures that inherently identify costs while failing to quantify benefits of species recovery.
As a result of this loophole, several marine fish species, including porbeagle shark, Atlantic cod, sockeye salmon, and chinook salmon, are not receiving the protection they deserve.
Question for candidates:
1: Does your political party support the implementation of integrated ocean management protecting marine fish species at risk using Canada's Species at Risk Act?
