Fuel-efficient Vehicles

Discussion/background information:

Transportation is responsible for more than 27 per cent of Canada's total greenhouse gas emissions.

One effective way to lower greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles throughout the economy is to require that they be manufactured to be more fuel efficient. However, vehicle fuel-efficiency standards in Canada have not improved since the mid-1980s. Canada currently lags behind other countries in the world with respect to standards for fuel efficiency: Europe, Japan, and even China require vehicles to be more efficient than those in Canada.

Tailpipe emission standards for carbon dioxide equivalent to the California standards would be an effective way for Canada to improve fuel efficiency.

More fuel-efficient vehicles are not only better for the environment; they also mean fewer trips to the gas station to fill up, and can help consumers save money.

Question to ask your candidate:

Does your party support increasing Canada’s vehicle fuel-efficiency standards so that they are equivalent to California or European standards?
