why no incentives?

By September 30, 2008

Where are the government incentives to put up solar roofs? In Ontario, no assistance is available. How bizarre is that?

Given the collapse of our hydro grid in recent years, and the anticipated immigration of 1,000,000 new residents in Ontario, we are going to need more hydro. If we were progressive on the issue, we might consider the following:

1.   Make it mandatory for all new homes to have "roughed in" electrical components that would make the addition of reverse metering an easier task. The cost to do this is minimal. Then offer an incentive package that would entice home owners to add solar panels or windmills.

2.    Make it mandatory for all new roofs on existing homes to require a permit and inspection to determine a minimum coverage of solar panel for the new roof. Costs or portions thereof could be up fronted by the government and paid back to them by the extra electricity that your new roof would generate.
