What kind of self delusional moron thought it was a good idea to take what little land is left to grow food on this planet and use it to burn in our cars? Countless numbers of people are dying each and every day of starvation, yet we as self important westerners believe that ethanol is the answer to our energy problems? Only a fraction of the population owns a car, yet we are willing to take the food out of some one elses mouth in order to drive it. Disgusting.
Here on PEI they are considering the idea of putting up an ethanol processing plant. The farmers are excited as they believe they will be able to get more money for their crops, and the plant will create new jobs.
In the last few years the provinces only two meat processing plants closed due to bankruptcy, even after millions were given in provincial and federal funding. Our society has become one where it is cheaper to get beef from another country than to raise the animals in our own back yard! How did this happen?
The large ethanol companies have already made dirty deals with the governments of third world countries in order to get cheap corn… Farmers are being kicked off their land, and killed if they so much as utter a word of protest. This allows for the cheapest possible way to obtain the corn for processing, allowing for the largest profit for the large companies. Are we so blind that we cannot see the fact that local corn will still be to expensive for the companies to make their immense profits? The only thing an ethanol plant would do here on PEI is further contribute to the pollution problems, our ground water is already poisoned with pesticides and our land eroding away.
Why can’t people see past the quick fixes and look further into the future. The only viable solution to our energy woes is in renewable energy sources. The trillions of dollars spent on the war could have went into research for harvesting the wind and sun’s energy, not senseless killing and slaughter of our fellow man.

I felt very much like you not too long ago. And I do see a raise in food prices here in the city, which are very easy to quickly blame on Ethanol. But the average layperson doesn't realize that there currently is an overabundance of corn production. That with even the large amount of corn the average Canadian eats (think of how many products have "corn syrup" in them), most of the production of corn goes to Animal Feed. And that after extracting the Ethanol from corn, there is still a large amount of material which can result in higher quality feed for animals (the alcohol is removed, but there is still plenty of protein). So in essence, if done right, ethanol production could result be increased without ever touching our wallets... short of lowering gas prices.
But don't take my word for it. Who am I anyway? Check the sources of all your facts ;)
I heard it on NPR's Science Friday (the US alternative to CBC's Quirks and Quarks). Listen to the guy speak, and look at where he gets his info. If his ideas can be implemented, we could be one step closer to greener fuels, AND a more stable income for farmers!
