As a western society we live in a world that is dictated by big business, whereby the government makes its decisions based on the economic needs of large corporations. The average person is to ignorant to see the obvious truth, they are to caught up in the day to day struggles of working, raising children, paying mortgages, car payments and credit cards. Our society tells us that “success” is defined by how much overpriced stuff you own and how often you update it to keep with the times. It is not enough to have the huge house that will take your entire life to pay off but then you must fill that house with IKEA furniture, and heaven forbid if one does not redecorate at least every 5 years with brand new stuff. The cost of this vanity to the environment is overwhelming, the energy used to produce mountains and mountains of “stuff” and then we fill the landfills with things that are still functional merely because it is outdated. Oh how the economic wheel keeps turning.
Fundamentally we need to allow for every Canadian the opportunity to educate themselves, to better their understanding of the consequences of their actions. Many Canadians cannot see past their backyard let alone look at the larger issues troubling our planet. An educated society would allow for the more difficult questions to be put to our politicians, people could see past the quick fixes and political slogans and elect intelligent people working for the greater good of the human race.
Free post secondary education and more funding into our public schools systems is the first step towards a better future for all.
