Let’s speak up for the country we want
We’ve just had our federal election and, if nothing else, the environment did become an issue. Unfortunately, global warming and other environmental issues were overshadowed by an economic crisis and, no doubt, by the fear people have of the word tax, so much so that they didn’t notice the word cuts was also in there.
Now it’s up to all of us to make sure the environment doesn’t get lost in all the noise about the economy. The new government has some important choices to make in the near future.
Although a few nations are putting plans to combat global warming on the back burner while they weather the economic crisis, many more are holding fast, realizing that protecting the environment makes good economic sense. The European Union has stated that it is committed to meeting emissions targets even as some Eastern European countries are getting cold feet.
And the U.K. has created a Department of Energy and Climate Change to confront both energy security and climate change, with an …

charging people for use of local landfills has resulted in garbage being dumped everywhere.
My relative from Europe visited Canada in the 70's and at that time was impressed by how clean and organized our cities and roads were. He visited again earlier this year and was shocked to see how much garbage there is along the sides of our highways, in ditches and in our industrial parking lots.
Last year, I travelled and visited 22 countries around the world, from South and Central America to Europe. Toronto and southern Ontario are definitely in the top 5 dirtiest places that I …
Read More »I've been watching the news these last few days after the election and they have been saying the same thing over and over again: the carbon tax is a tough sell and it cost Dion the election. This comment is disturbing because it suggests that any political leader who wants the job ought to avoid promising meaningful change in our greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, we might never see any progress on our climate change problem inCanada. The question remains, is this analysis…

So, we have another minority government headed by the Tories. Canadians have spoken loudly, and made clear that we want the political status quo to continue.
But the election results also made it clear that the majority of Canadians voted for a party that promised real action on environmental issues. We demanded real action on climate change, green energy, clean air and water.... the quality of life issues that unite all of us.
We are the majority and the government of Canada represents all of us. We will demand accountability from our politicians.
Stay tuned...
Beaver to Ostrich
The Canadian national animal should be changed from the beaver to the ostrich. Canadians elected a party that denies global warming so they too could pretend it presents no danger.
Democracy is still a rare privilege in this world - something we should value and not take for granted. Make sure you're counted in - get to your polling station today.

Dr. Suzuki's article in common Grond was a major disappointment
I just read Dr. Suzuki's article in Common Ground on the environment and the elections. People look to him for leadership and he refused to give it. He refused to give any information to help people decide, or to rank the parties by how effective their plans were. If anything, he made the Conservatives sound like the best possible choice. That was not being fair. That was cowardly and dishonest.

I'm off to vote in 3 hours and I still don't get it.
I must be dense. I've read almost everything I can get my hands on around the various "solutions" our politicians have to the impact we humans are having on the environment, and I just don't get it.
I've come to the conclusion that in order to stop global warming, we are going to have to stop burning fossil fuels.....not slow down, reduce, conserve etc. .....STOP. In order to stop burning fossil fuels we are going to have to come up with alternative energy sources. What we have…
